What is a Genuine Temporary Entrant in Australia?

Australia is one of the top countries chosen by international students as the country offers top-quality education and is also home to some of the top-ranked universities in the world. If you plan to pursue your full-time higher education at an Australian university, you must fulfil the Genuine Temporary Entrant or GTE requirements.

What exactly is GTE? How to access GTE? Who can apply for a GTE? You can read the blog completely if you need answers to these questions.
GTE is a validation statement that indicates your genuine intention to study in Australia and not to look for staying back and applying for Permanent Residency. Here is all you need to know about a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE).

Why is a Genuine Temporary Entrant required in Australia?

The idea behind the Genuine Temporary Entrant is to convince the Department of Home Affairs that you are coming to Australia only to attain a quality education and will not live there permanently.

Every international student who wishes to study in Australia must provide this to demonstrate that they are coming to Australia only for educational purposes.

Who All Needs to Apply for Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)?

All international students who wish to pursue a full-time course from an Australian university must apply and fulfil the GTE requirements.

If you want to pursue part-time education in Australia or work outside your college hours to support yourself, you need not apply for a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE).

What Are the Evidence and Information to Include in GTE for Australia?

The best thing is to include the maximum possible information and evidence in your GTE statement to provide an overall view of your profile. You must provide evidence to support any information mentioned in your statements, as generic ideas not supported by evidence will not be weighted heavily in the GTE assessment.

You must provide the necessary information and evidence in your GTE Statement. They are given below.
Academic background: This includes your academic transcripts, information about gaps in studies (if any), institution name, study duration, and certificates of attainment.
  1. A gap in the previous study: If you have gaps in your studies where you did not maintain enrolment, you must mention a valid reason for that and provide evidence for it.
  2. Current Employment: This includes details of your current employer, company address, period of employment, designation, and references to confirm the details of your current employer.
  3. Ties to the home country or country of residence: In this, you need to show your proof of financial, family, or social relationships. You should show strong ties with your home country that justify your significant incentives to return home.
  4. The economic situation in your native country/country of residence: Provide evidence regarding the case in your native country, such as documents showing your employment or business activities for 12 months before applying, potential job offers post-study (including salary and other benefits), income tax return, and bank statements.
  5. Employment in a third country: This includes potential job offers, including salary and other benefits, after course completion.

At the end of the GTE statement, after enclosing all the information and evidence, make sure to close the GTE Statement with a personal declaration.
The individual declaration must display that all the evidence and information provided by you is accurate. A GTE must be concise and honest without any false information.

How to Access GTE?

The GTE statement ensures that the student visa program for Australia is only being accessed for study purposes and is not a way to make residency in Australia. The GTE requirement helps identify applicants using the student visa program for motives other than gaining a quality education. It separates the applicants who are opting for a student visa program as a motive to reside in Australia from the students who genuinely want to attain quality education in Australia. The Department of Home Affairs assesses GTE based on the information you provide and the evidence of support enclosed with it.

Assessment Criteria

Consideration

Situations in your home country (or country of residence)

  1. Reasons for moving to Australia if a similar course is available in the home country.
  2. Ties to your home country that justify an intention to return after course completion.
  3. Economic background
  4. Military service commitments, political and civil unrest in your home country

Potential Situation in Australia: Ties to Australia that present a valid incentive to stay in Australia

  1. Level of knowledge of the selected course and education provider
  2. Previous academic records
  3. Planned accommodations
  4. Financial stability

Value of the course with future reference

  1. If the course is relevant to your current level of education.
  2. If it is not pertinent to past or proposed future employment in your home country or a third country.
  3. Expected salary and other benefits in your native country or a third country after course completion.

Immigration History

  1. Previous visa applications for Australia or other countries.
  2. Visa refusals or cancellations.

GTE Australia Approval Time

The GTE and visa applications are processed simultaneously, and the processing time for visa applications is around four months. The processing time of the application will expedite if the department does not need to request any additional documents from your end. So, the best suggestion is to include all the information and provide all the details possible in your application.

How to Submit a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)?

To get admission to any Australian university, you are required to complete the GTE assessment process. This assessment includes a personal statement and questionnaire.
So, to submit a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE), you need to provide personal information in English addressing the GTE requirements.
In this, you need to show yourself as a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) and student, and you wish to come to Australia for quality education and do not aim to settle there.
It is best to write the personal statement in English, but you can also write it in your native language and then submit a translated version with your application.
Also, make sure to attach the evidence to support your statement. Statements without any evidence do not weigh much in front of the evaluators.

Genuine Temporary Entrant Interview

The interview is the final stage of the GTE assessment process. It is a further assessment of your sincere willingness to study in Australia and is conducted by a case officer through Skype. In the interview, the immigration officer will ask questions about yourself, your purpose for studying in Australia instead of your country, details about your course and the university, future goals, finances, and similar inquiries. The interview level also depends on your home country's risk level. Make sure to understand your course thoroughly and answer the questions in agreement with the information provided in your GTE.

Will My Student Visa Be Refused if I Fail the Genuine Temporary Entrant Requirement?

Passing the GTE is one of the major requirements to get an Australian student visa, as it acts as an integrity measure. GTE assessment ensures that the student visa program is to get quality education and not a medium to settle in Australia.

So, there are high chances that your study visa will be refused if the Immigration Office believes you have no intention to study in Australia. The immigration officer evaluates your visa application in-depth. If he finds any gap in your employment history, immigration history, or study purpose that reflects an unwillingness to study, your student visa will be refused.
