IELTS Listening Practice Test

The IELTS Listening is one of the most important sections of the entire IELTS test. The section tests your Listening skills, in which you will get four recordings where you can hear the conversations of native English speakers. The Listening sections are not very difficult, and you just have to do several Listening practice tests to get an idea about the section. You will be asked to answer 40 questions in 30 minutes.

In the IELTS Listening section, you will be asked to answer 40 questions in response to four recordings. There will be four Listening passages that consist of monologues and conversations by native English speakers. In the IELTS Listening test, your ability to understand the following will be assessed.

1. The opinions and attitudes of the speakers.
2. The ability to follow the development of ideas.
3. The main ideas and detailed factual information.
4. The purpose of an utterance.

The IELTS Listening section consists of questions in the following formats. 

1. Multiple-choice
2. Matching
3. Plan, Map, Diagram Labelling
4. Form, Note, Table, Flow-chart, Summary Completion
5. Sentence Completion
6. Short-answer Questions

You can answer the multiple-choice question in one or more correct answers. If there is more than one possible answer, the list of possible answers will be longer. The multiple-choice Listening exercises will have questions in two formats.

1. One question followed by three possible answers (A, B, C).
2. The beginning of a sentence followed by three possible ways to end the sentence.

In this section, you will be required to match a numbered list of items from what you hear in the recording. It assesses your ability to follow a conversation between two people. Additionally, your ability to understand the information given in a conversation on an everyday topic, such as identifying types of guest or hotel accommodation.

You will be asked to complete labels on a plan (like a building), map (like a part of a town), or diagram (like a piece of equipment). You will usually be able to select answers from a list on the question paper.

1. The outline focuses on the main ideas/facts in the test. It will be any of the following.
2. A form that is used to record factual information such as name, address, and mobile number.
3. A table that is used to summarise information that is related to clear categories like place, time, and price.
4. A set of notes that are used to summarise information using the layout to show how different items relate to each other.
5. A flow chart is used to summarise a process which has clear stages, with the direction of the process shown by arrows.

You will listen to the audio and will be asked to read a set of sentences summarising key information from either all the listening text or from one part of it. There will be a maximum word limit as well. If you write more than the limit, your answer will be marked incorrect. Additionally, you should not use contracted words like “can’t”. Hyphenated words like “one-sided” will be calculated as a single word.

In these types of questions, you will need to give short answers to questions that are based on the audio you listened to. In some cases, you will have to list two or three points. You may sometimes be given a word limit as well. Additionally, you should not use contracted words like “don’t”. Hyphenated words like “far-fetched” will be counted as single words.
