Tips to Save Money on GRE Exam Fees

Saving money on the GRE exam booking fees can be helpful, especially if you are a student or on a tight budget. Here are some tips to help you reduce the cost of taking the GRE.

  • Plan and Prepare: Give yourself time to prepare for the GRE. The more prepared you are, the better your chances of getting a high score on your first attempt, reducing the need for retakes.
  • Apply for Fee Waivers: ETS offers fee waivers for students who demonstrate financial need. You can check their website for eligibility criteria and application details.
  • Register Early: ETS often offers a discount for registering early for the GRE. Plan your test date well in advance and take advantage of these early registration discounts.
  • Check for Promotions: Keep an eye out for any promotions or discounts ETS may offer from time to time. They occasionally run special offers or discounts on GRE registration.
  • Consider GRE Test Prep Packages: Some test prep companies offer packages that include both study materials and a test voucher. These packages can be cost-effective if you need study materials and plan to take the GRE.
  • Utilise Free Resources: Take advantage of free GRE study resources available online and at your local library. A few websites, books, and apps offer free study materials.
  • Group Discounts: If you are planning to take the GRE with friends or classmates, you can check if there are group discounts available. Sometimes, registering as a group can lead to cost savings.
  • Retake Only When Necessary: Avoid taking the GRE multiple times if it is not necessary. Carefully assess your scores and determine if retaking the test will significantly improve your application.
  • Consider Test-Optional Schools: Some graduate programs have adopted test-optional admission policies, which means you can apply without submitting GRE scores. Research schools that align with your goals and do not require the GRE.
  • Explore Scholarships and Grants: Look for scholarships or grants that can cover GRE fees. Some universities offer financial assistance to students taking standardised tests.
  • Apply for Financial Aid: If you are a college student, consider applying for financial aid to cover the cost of the GRE. Some financial aid packages may include funds for standardised testing.
  • Budget Wisely: Plan your GRE expenses as part of your overall education budget. Saving a small amount each month can help you cover the costs when the time comes to register for the exam.

By taking advantage of the available discounts, fee waivers, and resources, you can significantly reduce the financial burden of taking the GRE exam. Remember to check ETS's official website for the most up-to-date information on fees and discounts.
