GMAT Focus Edition Syllabus

The GMAT Focus Edition is an addition to the Graduate Management Admission Test. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) launched it on November 7, 2023, as the GMAT Focus Edition 2024.

Covered under three broad areas, namely Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, the GMAT Focus Edition syllabus is comprehensive enough to assess persons possessing diverse skills that bring about success in MBA and other management courses.

With wide acceptance across more than 110 countries and eligibility criteria fit for aspiring business leaders globally, the GMAT Focus Edition continues to be the benchmark in the admission process for about 2,300 schools and more than 7,000 programs.

GMAT Focus Edition Syllabus Update 2024

The GMAT Focus Edition syllabus has been revised to keep up with the current trends in business education and practice in 2024. Essentially, this has resulted in more focus on certain questions, which identify candidates' ability to integrate information drawn from multiple sources.

Changes in the Quantitative and Verbal sections include question-type changes to suit analytical skills, more related to critical thinking in today's business scenarios.

  • Data Sufficiency: Tests quantitative topics with logic-based and verbal-based questions.
  • Graph Interpretation: Measures ability to analyze and infer relationships from graphs (scatter plots, bar charts, etc.).
  • Multi-Source Reasoning: Evaluates logic and data analysis through text, tables, and graphics.
  • Table Analysis: Assesses ability to analyze and extract relevant data from tables.
  • Two-part Analysis: Combines logic, quantitative, and data analysis skills to solve complex problems.

GMAT Focus Edition Quantitative Reasoning Syllabus

The Quantitative section of the GMAT Focus Edition tests a candidate for their ability to solve Quantitative problems and analyze information given in various forms of data. GMAT Focus Edition quant syllabus comprises questions on algebra, geometry, and arithmetic, which are further divided into two major types:

  • Problem Solving: These questions test quantitative reasoning and solution-solving skills through Robertatel's mathematical problems. These require one to apply mathematical concepts and use logical reasoning to reach a solution.
  • Data Sufficiency: These would be the questions that require one to look at a quantitative problem for sufficiency of information to solve the problem. Candidates should assess the sufficiency and relevance of the given data, but not solve the problem.

GMAT Focus Edition math syllabus is of immense importance since it checks mathematical ability and analytical reasoning that a professional requires to lead in business environments.

GMAT Focus Edition Verbal Reasoning Syllabus

The purpose of the Verbal Reasoning section of GMAT Focus Edition is to evaluate a candidate's ability in reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and command over English grammar and vocabulary. It contains the following major question types:

  • Reading Comprehension: Test the candidate's power to understand and analyze the information given in the passages and to come to some conclusion from it.
  • Critical Reasoning: The section tests reasoning skills by introducing arguments and soliciting evaluations concerning their logic, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • Sentence Correction: Tests grammatical skills, syntax, and effective communication by providing sentences with errors that have to be identified and corrected by candidates.

The VR section of GMAT Focus Edition is vital because it measures skills that are considered essential for postgraduate management education, such as the ability to understand complex texts, to touch arguments, and to communicate in English.

GMAT Focus Edition Data Insights Syllabus

For the third section of the GMAT Focus Edition exam, the Data Insights section of the Focus Edition tests candidates on the following topics:

Data Sufficiency:

  • Evaluating quantitative problems to determine which data is important.
  • Identifying the point where there is sufficient data to solve a problem.

Multi-Source Reasoning:

  • Analyzing data from various sources, including text, tables, and graphics.
  • Recognizing discrepancies, making inferences, and determining the relevance of data.

Table Analysis:

  • Interpreting and manipulating data presented in table format.

Graphics Interpretation:

  • Interpreting information from various types of graphics such as scatter plots, x/y graphs, bar charts, pie charts, and statistical curve distributions.
  • Finding relationships and making inferences based on graphical information.

Two-Part Analysis:

  • Solving problems that may involve quantitative, verbal, or a combination of both elements.
  • Evaluating trade-offs, solving simultaneous equations, and identifying relationships.

This section is a new addition to the GMAT Focus Edition syllabus, essentially a concise version of the Integrated Reasoning section and part of the Quantitative section from the previous GMAT exam syllabus.
