Coventry University began its foundations in 1843 with the Coventry School of Design, later renamed the Coventry School of Art. In 1902, the Municipal Art School was renamed as part of the Education Act. It was finally known as the College of Art in 1950. A new college was built to meet the technical training requirements in 1961, known as the Lanchester College of Technology, which later merged with the College of Art and Rugby College of Engineering and Technology to form the Lanchester Polytechnic in 1970. Thirty five years later, it was renamed Coventry Polytechnic, which was changed to Coventry University.
